Sibec 2024 highlights sustainable ocean development

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah International Blue Economy Conference 2024 (Sibec 2024) opened the door to important conversations about sustainable fisheries, renewable ocean energy, marine tourism, and innovation in mariculture.

Held over the weekend at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), the State Government is particularly excited about the possibilities offered by Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (Otec).

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (pic), also the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, said Otec diversifies Sabah’s energy sources and complements the agricultural and mariculture efforts by providing sustainable solutions for farming practices.

“The conference marks Sabah’s first step in elevating the Blue Economy to a higher level, reflecting our commitment to sustainable growth and development.

“The topics are crucial to our efforts in sustainably utilising both ocean and river resources to achieve balanced and sustainable economic growth.

“With strategic collaboration between various sectors and stakeholders, including agriculture, I am confident that we will achieve sustainable economic growth, create job opportunities, and preserve our marine resources for future generations.

“Our commitment to preserve marine ecosystems while driving economic growth will remain a key focus of the State Government,” he said in his closing speech on Sunday.
