Kota Kinabalu: Some 800 of Sabah’s business leaders and entrepreneurs turned up for the 2024 CEO Master Class Sabah organised by Sabah Young Business and Industry Leaders (Sybil) and Malaysian International Chamber Of Commerce & Industry (Micci) at Sabah International Convention Centre, here, on Thursday.
The keynote address “Rising Against the Odds – From Humble Beginnings to Global Empire” was given by Berjaya Corporation Berhad founder, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, after keynote sessions from 11 panellists.
Sybil Founding President Ar James Wong Kein Peng said the turnout represented over 50 industries, hundreds of businesses and corporates worth billions in economic activity.
He emphasised that the event was in part of the journey to success for all willing Sabahans in creating new opportunities through a powerful network that is Sybil by learning from titans of the industry.
“What if we could learn not only to start new successful ventures, but how to manage them well and to be inspired to scale it up into massive organisations that make an impact on the Sabah Economy,” he said in his opening speech.
He recalled visiting other successful entrepreneurs in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore a few years ago and was amazed how they were scaling organisations from 30 to 50 outlets a year.
“Yet some of us in Sabah call ourselves entrepreneurs sitting behind a cashier, banking in our money every day.
“I remember thinking to myself, it was not that we are any less capable but I realised they had unlocked their imagination of what was possible.
“It was not a difference of capability, but it was a difference of exposure… Imagine the powerful learnings we would all receive and apply in our organisations,” he said.

The moderators were James himself, Datuk Lee Swi Heng who is MICCI Sabah Chairman and its Immediate Past President Datuk CK Tan.
